In October 2016 Olive Branch Arts returned to the Sahrawi Refugee Camps in SW Algeria to continue training young people in theatre and performance. Our generous supporters showed solidarity with the Sahrawi by backing our ‘Take Flight’ A Sahrawi Refugee Theatre Project on Crowdfunder and giving voice to a forgotten people. We raised an amazing £3,505.
‘Take Flight’ was a reimagining of the story of Icarus & Daedalus explored from the Sahrawi perspective. Over 3 weeks we worked with 20 young people offering them a safe place to come together, play & learn new skills, taking them out of their everyday lives & offering some respite from an extremely difficult & challenging living environment.
The Olive Branch Arts team work as volunteers, so every penny raised went directly to the cost of running the project.
Below is a video of our 2015 project in partnership with TigerMonkey, shot by Frena Kidane.
A beautiful and inspiring book that celebrates and raises awareness of an incredible refugee community who have been living in the Algerian Sahara since 1975. Photographer Emma Brown has spent the last 2 years documenting the work of Olive Branch Arts on the refugee camps and ‘Sahrawi Spirit’ is the culmination of all of this work.
All funds raised from the sale of the book go towards the Olive Branch Community Artist Fund ensuring local Refugee Sahrawi Artists receive paid employment on our projects.
